LIDO is proud to announce its first outdoor sculptural commission. Between the gallery and the beach lies the site of the former St. Leonards Bathing Pool, the only remains of this beloved holiday destination being a pair of concrete platforms emerging from its grassed-over silhouette. On the east platform Dylan Shipton has created The Overbearing Mother, a dayglow structure protruding from a beached shipping container. On one side sits a rather superfluous veranda, while on the other is an advertising hoarding for which Shipton has in turn commissioned a sign from Ben Fitton. Barely legible, but carrying the text The gap that has been left by the departure of / will soon enough make itself felt, Fitton's sign acknowledges the vital potential that resides within a gap, a pause, an absence.
Just as Shipton's extraordinary structure temporarily takes its place among the ruins of this former pleasure site, the space within the sculpture is given over to another temporary resident. For four consecutive weekends The Overbearing Mother becomes host to a micro-cinema for the screening of artists' films. Organised by Christine Gist / Interface, eight artists and curators have been invited to select a programme of films to be screened for one day only.
